Study & Write T5 (Opinion about the copyright reform ideas)

In this post I would like to provide my opinion regarding the 6 points in Chapter 2 of The Case for Copyright Reform. To my mind, the copyright reform is really needed right now, since even non-commercial use of someone's ideas now violates copyright laws. To me it seems that soon we will have to pay for talking, since "someone has already said that". Of course, this is an exaggeration, but copyright laws are getting stricter and stricter. This means that people now can't freely share information because of the fear of copyright violation. But isn't free access to any information for everybody has always been a humanity's dream? Free exchange of information is the key to human development, and with all these strict rules we stopped it.

This is why I think that the copyright reform is needed. The one described in the book "
The Case for Copyright Reform" seemed interesting to me. I agree with almost every point of the proposal made in the book, except the "20 Years Of Commercial Monopoly" one. Today's protection time of life + 70 years is of course too much. However, 20 years from publication also sound too few. The idea behind 70 years is that children of some author's creation could also gain financial benefit from their ancestor's work. And they have a full right to do so. Though, I would like to emphasize again the fact that life + 70 years is too much. Life + 40 years sounds more fair to me, as it gives a chance to author's descendants to manage his autorship rights for a long time, but not as long as it is now.

The points of the reform that I support the most are "A Ban on DRM" and "Free Non-Commercial Sharing". As it is stated in the book, DRM restrictions can be perceived in the way that companies are trying to set their own rules, but people are used to it being the government's job. And finally, free non-commercial exchange of information and unchanged moral rights (which could be united into one point) points are essential to implement. If we could freely use the information we get on the Internet, there could be more creative and educated people in the world. What would be needed is to always give credit. In my opinion, it may make the original author even more popular, as if as many people as possible share his/her ideas, it acts like a free advertisement for them and more people could follow this person's creations. This way, people could continue their development and the dream of free access to information would come true.
