Study & Write T14 (Assistive technology)

In this post I will write about an example of the "if a person has control over any function, it can also be used to control the computer" principle. To be more precise, I will cover eye tracking devices.

Eye tracking devices (also called gaze interaction devices) can be used to determine the point at which user is looking at on a computer screen. Moreover, these devices also let users control the computer with their eyes. For example, users can "click" with their eyes by focusing on one point or blinking. These devices are extremely beneficial for people with disabilities who cannot user their hands.

How does eye tracking devices work?

An eye tracker consists of various sensors, cameras and projectors. The projectors create a pattern of near-infrared light on your eyes. The cameras take high-resolution images of the user's eyes and the pattern. Received data is processed with machine learning and mathematical algorithms to determine the eyes' position and gaze point.

Though actively used for human-computer interaction, eye tracking is used in other fields as well:

In psychology

Looking at how and when people look can tell a lot about how their attention is distributed, therefore eye tracking is used in several psychological tests.

In healthcare

Studies have show that eye tracking can be used to effectively predict several neurological disorders by looking at patient's eye-moving pattern.

In marketing

By looking at customers' gaze patterns marketers can analyze what people attend to and what people ignore when looking at their product or service to improve the design. This can be used in online shopping as well as in real life shops.
